Took me 6 months to realize my grocery budget was leaking through bulk bins

I kept wondering why I was spending $80 extra a month on groceries. Finally weighed my bulk bin purchases and realized I was paying for the tare weight of the bag plus overfilling by about 30% every time. Has anyone else caught hidden costs in how they shop?

That 30% overfill is probably adding up fast. My local co-op has a scale right next to the bins and I weigh my empty container first, then reset it so I only pay for the goods. @irisowens, I'm curious though - do you think writing the actual weight on the tag has ever backfired? I've heard of cashiers just ringing it up at the register without re-weighing if the tag looks official enough. Seems like a risky shortcut since you're trusting them to catch it.

Wait, are you saying you got charged for the BAG itself? That's such a sneaky thing. I started bringing those really thin reusable produce bags and writing the actual weight right on the tag with a sharpie before I fill them.
