Vent: My sister told me I was "budgeting wrong" for years and I'm still annoyed she was right

She saw me throwing $50 a month at a random savings account with no goal and told me I needed to actually track where every dollar goes. I argued with her for like 20 minutes about how I had a system. Then I finally sat down and used a free spreadsheet she sent me. Turns out I was blowing $120 a month on buying lunch at the deli near my office. Now I pack sandwiches and put that cash toward my car insurance instead. Has anyone else had a friend or relative call them out on a bad habit and it actually helped?

Man I think that's just how life works sometimes. People on the outside can see the cracks in your routine way clearer than you can. I had a buddy call me out for always buying energy drinks at gas stations instead of just getting a bulk pack at the store and it turned out I was dropping like $40 a month on that nonsense. Little stuff adds up faster than most folks want to admit.

Wait $40 a MONTH on gas station energy drinks? That's wild honestly. Like I get grabbing one here and there when you're running late but that adds up to nearly $500 a year. My jaw literally dropped reading that number.

Yeah @murray.cora nailed it. The hardest part is admitting someone else could spot your blind spot before you could. Once you get past the pride of defending your old way it's actually a relief to fix it and move on.
