Ugh, that's the worst. I once knocked a full glass of water right onto my external hard drive. Lost about six months of photos from a trip, stuff I never uploaded anywhere else. Still makes me cringe thinking about it.

Watched a buddy set his coffee mug right on top of his laptop's keyboard vent. He didn't even notice the spill until the screen went black. Turns out he was finishing his ENTIRE thesis draft, the only copy, because his cloud backup hadn't run in weeks. The repair guy said the logic board was toast. He basically had to start that whole chapter over from scratch.
