Overheard someone at Target say bullet journaling is just 'adult coloring books for people who can't relax'

I was grabbing some groceries last week and heard this girl telling her friend that bullet journaling is basically just a way for anxious people to feel productive by drawing pretty boxes. It kind of stuck with me. I mean yeah I do use it to track my sleep and work schedules but also it helps me actually remember to pay bills and call my mom. The decorative stuff is just extra. It got me thinking about how the outside view of something is always simpler than what it really does for you. Has anyone else had to explain their bujo to someone who just didnt get it?

What is it about doodling a rocket that makes the whole thing click for people?

My buddy Dave used to clown on my bujo all the time. Called it my "stress scrapbook" lol. Then one day he lost track of his freelance deadlines and missed a big payment. So I made him a simple weekly spread with just the bare bones - due dates, pay days, and a little habit tracker. No frills, no colors, nothing fancy. He's been using it for six months now and even bought himself a new notebook when his filled up. Last week he texted me a picture of his spread with a little doodle of a rocket ship on the corner and said "okay I get it now." Some people just need to see it work before they stop making jokes.

That rocket doodle might be the moment he felt permission to make the system his own.
