Am I the only one who cut off a friend over a $50 loan in Cleveland and feels fine about it?
Back in March my buddy Dale asked me for $50 for gas money to get to a job interview in Cleveland. I handed it over at his kitchen table, no big deal, and he said he would pay me back Friday. Friday came and went. Then two weeks. I did not care about the cash, honestly, it was more that he started ducking my calls and avoiding me at the corner store like I was the one who messed up. After the third time he crossed the street to dodge me, I sent him one text saying the $50 was his to keep and I was done being treated like a bill collector. He called me dramatic and said I was throwing away 11 years of friendship over pocket change. Maybe I am, but it felt less like pocket change and more like him deciding my time did not matter. I blocked the number that night and slept fine. Curious if other folks here have walked away over something small that was really about the bigger pattern.
So you threw away 11 years over two quarters and a dime, huh? Sounds like Dale thinks a decade of friendship comes with a layaway plan. Here is the thing though, it was never about the fifty bucks, it was about him crossing the street like you were a rabid dog every time he saw you. Dude basically charged you fifty dollars to find out he is a flake, and honestly that is a bargain compared to what some people pay for that lesson. Eleven years of history does not mean much when the guy will not even stand still on the same sidewalk as you, so enjoy that good night's sleep.
