Chose my brother's wedding over my best friend's surgery week, still not sure I did right
Last March my brother set his wedding for the 14th, and that same week my best friend of 12 years found out she needed a pretty serious surgery on the 16th. She asked me to be there for the hospital stay, but I had already promised to be the best man and help with setup, so I picked the wedding. I visited her for 2 hours the night before, brought snacks and a charger, but she barely talked to me and I could feel the distance. She recovered fine, but now 8 months later she only texts me back every few weeks and turned down my holiday invite. I keep replaying if I could have split the difference somehow, like hiring a helper for the reception or flying back early. Has anyone else had to miss a friend's hard moment for a family obligation, and did that bridge ever rebuild?
