Cut off my cousin after the 4th of July cookout, and the rest of that week was the calmest I've had in 2 years
So this was back on the 4th, at my aunt's place in Toledo. My cousin Marcus showed up already three beers in and spent the whole cookout taking shots at me in front of my kids, stuff about my divorce, my job, my weight, all of it wrapped up like jokes. I bit my tongue for two hours, then he grabbed my shoulder and did the fake whisper thing loud enough for the whole patio to hear. I told him flat out we were done, packed up the cooler and left with my plates still in my hand. Thing is, the rest of that week felt lighter. I slept better, I didn't dread checking my phone, and Saturday morning I just sat on my porch with coffee and nobody texting me some passive junk. It's been quiet since, and quiet turns out to be pretty good. Now my aunt keeps saying I should smooth it over for her birthday next month, and I'm not sure I've got it in me. How do you all handle the family member who plays peacemaker for the person who started it?
