Rant: My sister's new boyfriend told me to cut off our mom for good

I was over at her place last Tuesday and heard him say that toxic family is like carrying a heavy box you can just set down... but my mom isn't abusive, just annoying with her overbearing advice. He says I should walk away completely, but my other friends say you don't burn bridges over minor stuff. Who's right here when it's more annoying than harmful?

Have you thought about what happens to your sister's relationship with you if she cuts off your mom and later regrets it? The boyfriend is giving advice based on his own baggage not yours, and that could drive a wedge between you two if she actually follows through. Might be worth telling your sister to pump the brakes and let her decide on her own terms instead of letting some new guy call the shots.

Yeah but what if her mom really IS the problem though... like how long has this been going on for?

Pile onto the pattern I keep seeing where people let romantic partners dictate their family relationships without thinking through the long term. Like yeah, maybe the mom is toxic, but jumping straight to cutting contact based on someone you've been dating for a few months is risky territory. My cousin did this exact thing, let her new boyfriend convince her her mom was controlling, and now she's been no contact for two years and the boyfriend is long gone. She regrets it every day, especially during holidays and family gatherings where there's this huge awkward gap.
