Showerthought: Cutting off my brother after that Thanksgiving dinner in 2022 was the best decision I ever made

He spent the whole meal at my place in Columbus making passive-aggressive comments about my job and my wife's cooking. The last straw was when he said my three year old niece was 'getting chunky' right to her face. I told him to leave and we haven't spoken since, about 18 months now. Has anyone else had family members who just can't stop with the little digs until you finally walk away?

Yeah, the niece thing was not out of left field at all. It was just the first time he took a direct shot at someone who literally couldn't defend herself. With adults he's more like a mosquito you can swat away, annoying but manageable. But saying that to a three year old? That's like dropping a bomb on a playground. I guess he figured since he'd been getting away with poking at me and my wife all night, he'd test the limits on a kid. My bad for thinking he had some kind of basic social filter, I guess that's on me.

So was there always this pattern with him where he'd pile on little stuff until he finally crossed a line with someone vulnerable like a kid, or was that comment about your niece more out of left field compared to his usual behavior toward adults? I'm trying to figure out if he's just a general jerk who can't read a room or if something specific set him off that night.
