Worked like magic" until your family starts taking sides and you're the bad guy for going no contact. In my experience, cutting people off quietly just makes the drama drag out longer than if you'd been upfront about it.

Three months later my aunt still brings it up at every family dinner like I'm the one who caused the drama. Your point about upfront conversations makes sense though, I just wasn't ready for that confrontation.
