Bought a used Filson coat off Craigslist 8 years ago and it looks better now than when I got it
The canvas broke in and the wool lining started forming to my body around year 3, but after that muddy hiking trip in Vermont last fall where I fell into a creek and the thing dried out looking tougher and more broken-in, I'm curious if anyone else has had a coat or jacket that actually improved with age like that?

Falling into that creek was the best thing that could have happened to that coat, honestly. There's something about getting a good piece of gear properly soaked and then letting it dry out naturally that just sets everything right. My dad's old Carhartt jacket from the 90s is the same way, that thing has been through hell and back and it just keeps getting softer and more comfortable. It's like the fabric finally gives up trying to be new and settles into being exactly what you need it to be.

Funny how that works with all kinds of things, not just gear. A pair of boots you've kicked through mud a hundred times, a cast iron pan that's seen a thousand meals - they all get better once they've been broken in and roughed up a bit. Kinda makes you wonder why we spend so much time trying to keep things perfect in the first place.
