Counted 8 people in my welding class using the wrong angle on their mig gun

I was watching a guy lay down a bead that looked like a bird took a poop on the metal. He was holding the gun at 45 degrees when the chart on the machine said 15 to 20. How do you handle telling someone they are doing it wrong without sounding like a jerk?

Starting with the chart on the machine is the best way to go. Just ask the guy if he saw the recommended angle for that wire and gas setup. Point at the chart and say something like "I noticed this says 15 degrees for that weld you are doing." It keeps it about the machine info instead of attacking his skill. Most guys will listen if you show them the proof right there on the chart. Then offer to watch his next bead and see if the angle change helps the puddle run smoother. He will probably appreciate the tip once he sees how much better it looks.

Figured out the hard way that most guys will just stare at you like you just insulted their grandma if you try that angle trick. Tried pointing at the chart once and the guy said "I been welding since before you was born, kid" then laid down a bead that made mine look like a bird did it. Guess some folks just got the touch even if they ignore the manual. But hey, at least when I screw up I can blame the chart.
