Lost a $400 tent when wind ripped it off a cliff at Big Sur last August
I set it up 15 feet from the edge, turned my back to grab a stake, and watched the whole thing tumble down the rocks like a tumbleweed, so can anyone recommend a shelter that actually has stakes that bite into hard-packed dirt?

Watched a buddy lose a tent to wind on a lake in Canada once, except his flew into the water and we had to paddle out to fish it out with a stick. It was a cheap Coleman and the stakes just kinda sat on top of the dirt like useless little noodles.

Haha, well at least you got a good story out of it. MSR Groundhogs are the only stakes I trust in hard dirt, they're those big Y-shaped ones that actually stay put. Most stock tent stakes are basically just thick paperclips, especially the ones that come with cheaper shelters.
