Shoutout to my 21 year old cast iron that survived a move, a flood, and my cooking
I pulled my grandmother's cast iron skillet out of storage last month after it sat in a flooded basement for three days back in May. Rust was everywhere, I mean it looked like a brick with a handle. Spent a full evening with vinegar, steel wool, and more elbow grease than I use on a whole house clean. Re-seasoned it three times with flaxseed oil and honestly it cooks better now than it did before the flood. Cost me maybe $12 in supplies to restore something that would run $80 new, if you can even find one that's not made in China. Makes me wonder how many people just toss stuff like this instead of putting in one night of work. Anyone else saved something beat up and found it was actually the best version of itself?
That "brick with a handle" line hit home. My buddy Mike found his dad's old hammer in a barn after it sat there for like ten years, head was rusted and the handle was split clean through. He spent a weekend sanding it down, shaped a new hickory handle from a blank, and oiled it up with linseed. Thing works better than any new hammer I've used, and now he won't let anyone touch it.
