Finally got the grain match right on a big built-in after three tries
Last month I was working on a floor to ceiling bookcase for a house in Portland, using walnut veneer ply. The first two sheets I cut, the grain just didn't flow right at the seams, it looked like a patchwork. I spent a whole afternoon re-sorting my stock, laying out the full sheets on the shop floor with tape to map it. The third sheet was the charm, the pattern runs up the whole side like one solid board now. Anyone else have a good method for planning veneer sheet layout on big pieces?

Nah, that attention to detail is what makes it pro work.

Exactly! Cooper's missing the point. It's not about people noticing every little thing. It's about knowing you did it right. That pride in your own work is what separates a real craft from just slapping stuff together. The grain matching might seem small, but it shows you care about the whole piece. That mindset is everything.

All that work for something most people won't even notice! I just number the sheets and glue them up, the mismatched grain adds character.
