My wife asked me why I never build anything for our own house.

I was finishing a custom walnut vanity for a client in Springfield, and she just looked at our old laminate one and said, 'You make beautiful things for everyone else.' It hit different because she's right, I'm always too busy or tired from the shop. Do you guys ever get around to making stuff for your own homes?

Oh man, the cobbler's kids have no shoes, right? I've got a half-finished bookshelf in my garage that's been waiting on me for like two years.

Two years on a bookshelf project is wild to me. I get the cobbler thing, but that's a whole weekend job max. What's the hold up, just sanding and staining?

My buddy Dave builds these amazing decks for a living. His own back porch was just concrete slabs for years. His wife finally hired another contractor to do it, and Dave came home to a finished deck. He said watching someone else build it for his family was a real gut punch.
