Pro tip: Your drawer fronts are upside down

I've seen three shops in my town mount them with the grain pattern running the wrong way, which makes the whole piece look off. How did you all learn to spot that?

Honestly, it's about the light. Wood grain has a natural sheen that catches light differently depending on which way it runs. When the pattern goes up, it looks alive. When it's flipped, it just looks flat and dead, like the wood is tired. I started noticing it in cheap hotel furniture and now I can't unsee it. It's a tiny detail that makes a huge difference in how finished something feels.

My old boss in Seattle drilled that grain rule into us. Troy_price nailed the why.

Yeah, pat781's old boss had it right. I always run the grain up on shelves now, makes the whole piece feel more solid.
