Realized I was sanding with the grain wrong for like 2 years
Was at a shop in Portland last month helping a buddy with his kitchen build. Older guy, probably 30 years in cabinets, watched me sand a door for about 30 seconds. He just goes "you're fighting the wood, not working with it." I thought I was going with the grain but I was actually hitting it at a slight angle, like 15 degrees off. It was leaving these tiny scratches I'd always blame on the sealer or finish. Felt like a total idiot. Anyone else have that one basic thing you missed for way too long?

Fighting the wood not working with it" ... yep, that's a good way to put it. I was there with a planer for way too long.

Read that going with the grain saves more time than fighting it.
