Serious question, I was at the art museum in Denver and the old furniture displays made me think.

They had a 19th century dresser with dovetails you could see were cut by hand, not perfect but full of character. It hit me that maybe my obsession with laser-straight lines from the CNC is missing the point of the craft. Do you ever worry modern tools are making us forget the soul of the work?

That 19th century guy woulda traded his soul for a CNC in a heartbeat.

Nah, the soul is in the design and the care you put in, not the tools. A CNC can make something beautiful if the person using it cares.

Totally get that. Saw an old hand carved chair once, same feeling. The little imperfections are what make it real.

That dresser in Denver probably had a guy cursing over every single one of those dovetails. My take is the soul is in not throwing the project out the window when you mess up the tenth one. A CNC just means you get to the swearing part of the process faster because you're already on to assembly. The old tools added time and frustration, not magic.
