That time a master carpenter set me straight on drawer slides in 5 minutes
I was struggling with side-mount slides on a kitchen remodel outside Nashville, and this old timer walked over and said 'stop fighting the box, son, measure the opening first.' He showed me how he scribes the gap before even touching the slides, and I've never had a sticky drawer since. Anyone else pick up a simple trick like that from watching someone work?

Sure, measuring first is basic stuff on paper, but I've seen plenty of guys skip it or guess the gap, then wonder why their drawers bind up. The real trick is that scribing step the old timer showed you - it's not about being dramatic, it's about getting the reveal perfect so you don't have to fight shims later. I've done probably hundreds of drawer installs and the ones where I take that extra two minutes to mark the gap always slide smoother in the end. Some lessons just stick because they save you from making the same mistake twice.

The whole "stop fighting the box" thing sounds a little dramatic to me, honestly. I mean, yeah, measuring the opening first is obvious, that's step one on any install. It's not some secret wisdom from a wise old carpenter, it's just basic math before you drill holes. I've seen guys make a huge deal out of scribing gaps too, but a lot of the time you can just shim it and move on without all the ceremony. Is it really that deep, or did that guy just want to sound important for five minutes?
