Visited a custom shop near Portland and their dust collection setup was wild
Stopped by a small cabinet shop outside Portland last month and they had this DIY cyclone system built from a 55 gallon drum and a $40 harbor freight motor. It ran quieter than my $900 shop vac setup and they said they haven't cleaned the filter in 8 months. I've always thought you need to drop serious cash on a proper system, but their results made me wonder if the expensive units are just marketing. Has anyone else tried a budget rig like this or do you still swear by the name brand gear?

Eight months without cleaning a filter sounds like they either don't make much sawdust or they're measuring "clean" loosely. A $40 motor pulling through a 55 gallon drum is basically a big shop vac with extra steps. I'm not saying it can't work, but I'd want to see the actual dust levels in that shop after a full day of cutting. Quiet is nice, but if it's not moving enough air at the source, you're just breathing your problems. Name brands have their place, but I'd rather see a cheap rig that's tuned right than an expensive one installed wrong.
