Walked into a 1920s bank turned woodshop in Waco and the old teller counter is their outfeed table
Was driving through Waco last month and stopped at this co-op shop inside an old bank building, and the first thing I noticed was the teller counter running the whole length of the room. Turns out the guys there use it as an outfeed table for their table saw, and the marble top is dead flat after a hundred years. I put my 4 foot level on it and it did not rock a hair, which is more than I can say for the plywood bench back at my place. The drawers under it still have the little brass number plates, and they keep chisels sorted by number so the 7 drawer holds the 7/8 inch stuff. The owner told me they spent about $2,800 getting the counter leveled and braced underneath, and he figures it was still cheaper than a real outfeed table of that size. Made me look at my own shop layout different, since I have been stacking scraps on a folding table for 6 months. Has anyone else worked a shop built around old fixtures like this, and did it actually hold up over time or did the flatness go after a few seasons?
