Warning: A painter's comment about my drawer boxes made me stop and think
I was finishing up a kitchen install in Tacoma last week and the painter, a guy named Dave, was looking at the drawer boxes I'd built. He said, 'You know, for all this fancy maple, you guys always use those plastic side guides. Looks cheap from the inside.' I've been using Blum undermount slides for years, but he had a point about the visual disconnect. I'm considering trying side-mount wooden runners on my next project for a cleaner look inside the box. Has anyone switched from undermount to side-mount for aesthetic reasons and regretted it?

How often do we miss that kind of simple detail? I mean, it makes total sense once someone points it out.

Man, that's a great point. I read a post a while back where a guy lined his drawer sides with thin strips of maple to hide the metal slides. It was a lot of extra work, but he said it made the whole piece feel more complete (and honestly, it looked amazing in the photos).
