Pro tip: skip the $13 router rental, I wasted $156 over a year figuring that out
I used to think renting the modem from the cable company was just easier, but after adding up 12 months at $13 each I realized I paid $156 for a box I could've bought outright for $60. Bought my own Surfboard and the speed is the same, only hassle was a 10 minute call to give them the MAC address. Anybody else get stuck in that rental trap for way too long?
That $156 hit is so real. I did the same math after about 8 months and felt like such a chump. What finally pushed me over the edge was when my rental box started dropping wifi every night around 9pm, and the rep told me I could swap it for another rental. Buying my own Arris fixed the drops and paid for itself in 5 months. The MAC address call took me like 15 minutes because I got bounced around twice, but still worth it. Just remember to actually return their box or they keep charging you.
