Question about fighting early termination fees, the 30 day window trick nobody mentions
I got hit with a $240 early termination fee from my cable company in Columbus 4 months ago when I moved apartments, and the rep told me there was nothing I could do. What nobody told me is you have a 30 day grace period after your bill cycle ends to dispute it in writing, and it has to be a paper letter to their corporate address, not a phone call. I sent a certified letter citing my contract's own terms and they wiped the fee in 12 days. Has anyone else used the written dispute window, and did you send it certified or regular mail?
The 30 day written dispute window thing is real. I read a Consumer Reports piece a while back that said most people just call and yell at the rep, which does nothing because phone reps have zero power to remove those fees. The letter has to go to the corporate address on your actual contract, not the billing address, and you have to cite the section about canceling due to a move. Certified mail matters too because it gives you proof they got it, and a lot of these companies will stall past the window if they can claim they never received anything.
