A customer's comment about our old coax lines made me stop and think
I was finishing a rewire in a house from the 90s, and the homeowner pointed at the old, thick cable snaking along the baseboard. He said, 'That stuff lasted thirty years. Will this new stuff?' It wasn't a complaint, just a real question. It made me consider how we talk about the lifespan of our work now versus back then. What's a fair expectation to set with customers about how long a modern install should hold up?

Honestly, that question would've made me defensive before, but now it just seems fair.

But that question still feels like a trap to me.

Yeah I used to get mad at questions like that too. Thought people were trying to catch me out. But then I saw my buddy get asked that in a meeting and he just laid out his plan, simple as that. Made me realize it's not a trap, it's just someone wanting to know how you'd actually handle the job. Changed my whole view on it.
