Tone testing with a cheap meter vs. the old analog wand

I cut my teeth using those analog wands where you had to guess if the beep was really your line or your buddy's 50 feet down. Now I run a Fluke tone generator with the digital readout and it's night and day for tracing runs in apartment buildings around Columbus. The older guys swear the analog was more reliable because you could 'feel' the signal, but I think it just took longer to learn. Anyone else switch methods and found the digital gear actually saves you an hour on a rough service call?
