An old guy at a flea market told me to use lighter fluid on a sticky shutter curtain

I was working on a Pentax Spotmatic with a slow second curtain. This older fellow at the Portland Saturday Market saw me looking at it and said, 'Just a drop of Ronsonol on the cloth tracks, not the metal.' I was really nervous, but I tried it on a junker body first. After letting it dry for a full day, the curtain moved smoothly. It's been six months and that camera is still working fine for its owner. Has anyone else had a good result with that method, or did I just get lucky?

Did you wipe off the excess fluid after applying it?

Wow, I used to skip that step.

My old recipe book actually says to leave it on for better flavor.
