Bought a $200 lens cleaning kit on Amazon, turned out to be overkill
I ordered this big ultrasonic cleaner kit from a seller called ProOptix last month. Spent about $200 and after three tries, I realized it was just shaking the dust off without actually cleaning anything. My old microfiber cloth and some eclipse fluid worked better. Has anyone else fallen for a fancy cleaning gadget that didn't deliver?

Wait, TWO HUNDRED dollars for a lens cleaning kit?! That is absolutely INSANE to me. I've been shooting for years and a bottle of Eclipse fluid and a pack of Pec Pads cost me like $30 total and they work PERFECT. I can't believe someone would pay that much for what basically sounds like a fancy jewelry cleaner. Those ultrasonic things are designed for metal and glass not for delicate lens coatings, you probably just vibrated the dust around like you said. Your microfiber cloth and Eclipse fluid is the REAL professional setup, that other stuff is a straight up scam. Honestly I'm mad FOR you that you dropped that kind of cash on something so useless.

Totally agree @logan658, $200 for that is painful just reading it.

I mean, $200 does sound like a lot, but I kinda wonder if it's that big of a deal. I've spent more than that on a single dinner that I barely remember. The ultrasonic cleaner thing is a known issue though, I read a review on DPReview once where a guy said his sensor got little spots after using one, so maybe you dodged a bullet. My old microfiber cloth has been doing fine for years too, so I'm not sure the fancy stuff is always worth getting worked up over.
