Dropped $240 on a Hakko FX-888D and it saved a Nikon F3 I was about to give up on
Two weeks ago a guy brings in a beat up Nikon F3 with a dead meter circuit and I quoted him $180 to even look at it. My old Radio Shack iron had been cooking pads for a while and I was this close to telling the guy to just sell it for parts. I finally caved and grabbed a Hakko FX-888D for around $240 with a couple spare tips, which felt insane for a hobby shop guy like me. First joint I hit with it, the solder flowed like butter and I lifted that corroded trace clean off without nuking the board. I actually got the meter reading again after reflowing three joints that I never would have touched with the old clunker. Now I keep looking at my bench and wondering how many boards I scrapped over the last few years just because my iron was junk. What iron are you all running, and did you ever figure out your gear was the problem instead of you?
