Finally got that sticky Nikon F3 shutter working after a tip from a retired tech

An old timer named Carl, who used to run a shop in Portland, told me to check the foam bumper under the mirror box, not the shutter magnets. I opened it up and sure enough, a tiny piece of degraded foam had turned to goo and was gumming up the works. Cleaned it out with some isopropyl and a cotton swab, and it's running smooth now. Anyone else run into this on the F3, or have a different fix?

Seems like a lot of fuss over a tiny bit of old foam. People talk about it like it's a major breakdown, but it's just a cleaning job. Maybe these old cameras just need a bit of regular care, not some big fix. It's not that deep.

Heard a buddy had the same gunked-up foam issue on his F3. He used a drop of lighter fluid on a toothpick and it worked like a charm.

Read that lighter fluid can damage some plastics over time.

Honestly, disagree that it's just a cleaning job. Finding that specific problem takes real know-how, and a lot of people would have given up. That old tech's tip saved the camera.
