Hot take: ultrasonic cleaners aren't always the answer

Tbh I was trying to clean a sticky shutter mechanism on an old Canonet and every forum said ultrasonic bath. I read a 1970s repair manual that said just use lighter fluid and a brush. Tried it and it worked way better without risking the lubrication. Has anyone else had better luck with old school methods over the fancy stuff?

My buddy tried ultrasonic on his Pentax and it wrecked the focus ring dampening grease.

Man that sucks about the dampening grease, I've heard those Pentax rings are a pain to re-lube if they get messed up. Hope your buddy can get it sorted without too much hassle.

Whoa wait, ultrasonic? On a lens? Thats wild. I didnt even know people tried that. Feels like that would mess up more than just the grease. Like the elements could get knocked loose or something. I would be way too scared to put glass in one of those machines. Honestly didnt realize ultrasonic was a common thing for lens repairs.
