Overheard a guy at the coffee shop say 'it's just a broken camera, toss it' and I almost spilled my drink.
He was talking about an old Nikon FE he found in his attic. Said the shutter was stuck and the light meter was dead. I couldn't help myself, I walked over and asked if I could take a look. Five minutes with a small screwdriver and some isopropyl on the shutter blades, and it fired. The meter just needed the battery contacts cleaned. He was stunned. It made me realize how much perfectly good gear gets written off because people don't know repair is an option, or think it's too hard. How do you guys try to spread the word that most things are fixable?

That guy was ready to toss a Nikon FE? Those are solid cameras. The fact it just needed basic cleaning is wild. I see it all the time with old electronics and appliances. People replace a whole coffee maker because the mineral buildup is too thick, or junk a speaker over a blown fuse. A little patience and a five dollar tool can save hundreds.

Man, I feel called out by what foster.jordan said because I've totally been that impatient person. I once almost threw out a lamp before realizing the switch was just dirty. A quick scrub and it worked for years after that. It's crazy how often the fix is just taking a second to look.
