That old timer in Portland made me rethink how I clean shutters
I used to just spray cleaner and wipe shutter blades on the camera, figured it was fine. Then Bob from Bob's Camera Service in Portland spent 10 minutes showing me his method at a repair meetup last fall - he takes the entire shutter out and cleans each blade separate on a microfiber pad. Tried it on a beat up Mamiya 1000 DTL and got zero drag on the blades for the first time. Any of you guys actually disassemble the shutter every time or just surface clean like I used to?

Bob's method makes total sense when you think about it. Surface cleaning just pushes the gunk around between the blades. I started doing full disassembly after a CLA on my Pentax Spotmatic and never looked back. The difference is night and day especially with old cameras that have years of dried oil and dust stuck in there. Takes longer yeah but once you get the hang of it the blades move buttery smooth for way longer than a spray and wipe job.
