A ranger told me my tent stakes were a joke, now I carry 10 inch ones
Last month at Shenandoah I watched my 6 inch stakes pull right out of the ground during a wind gust at 2am. A ranger walking by the next morning said 'those are for backyard use, not mountains.' Swapped to the MSR Groundhog stakes and did the same spot last weekend, zero movement even with 25mph wind. Anyone else get called out on gear that seemed fine until someone pointed it out?

Took me two trips in Colorado to learn that lesson. Carried the same cheap stakes for years, thought they were fine. Then a buddy pointed out my tent was basically a sail with toothpicks holding it down. Swapped to longer ones and the difference is night and day. Never going back to the short ones now.

Honestly the length matters less than the angle honestly. I used longer ones and still had a floppy tent till I learned to drive them at an angle into the ground.
