My buddy called my new ultralight tent a 'glorified trash bag' after a windy night in the Adirondacks.
He said, 'I saw it ripple like a sail, dude,' and now I can't unsee it. Anyone else have a piece of gear that got roasted into a new nickname?

Huh, that's funny because I used to think giving gear nicknames was kind of silly, but this whole thread is changing my mind. Especially what @the_piper said about the leaky tent being a personal water torture device, that really clicked for me. I used to just get annoyed at my own gear's quirks and never thought to name them or make them into characters. But now I'm thinking about my old sleeping pad that always slowly deflates by 4 AM, and I might just have to call it "the midnight sigh" or something. It's weird how putting a name to the problem takes the edge off, like you're in on the joke instead of just being a victim of bad gear. This perspective shift might actually save me some frustration on my next trip.

My old camp stove got called the 'dragon's cough' after a friend watched it sputter blue flames for ten minutes just to boil water. The name stuck hard, and now I just lean into it when I pull it out. It actually made me less annoyed about its weird little problems, gave the thing some character. Your tent has a story now, a battle scar from a rough night. That's way better than just being another piece of gear in the closet.

That "battle scar" idea is good, but my tent's not just telling a story. It's actively trying to get me killed. The patch is on the inside, so every time it rains, a single, cold drip lands right on my forehead at 3 AM. It's less a mark of honor and more a personal water torture feature. The character it added is mostly me swearing and fumbling for duct tape in the dark.

Read a blog post once where a guy called his leaky tent "the oracle" because it always knew exactly where to drip to cause maximum misery. Your forehead drip sounds like a targeted attack, honestly. That's not character building, that's the tent holding a grudge. Martin's stove sounds fun, but a drip at 3 AM is just cruel. Maybe you should give your tent a really mean nickname so it knows you're onto its games.
