My camp stove pump seal gave out halfway through making dinner in the Tetons
It happened last Friday evening just as I was boiling water for pasta. The flame sputtered and died, and I could hear air hissing from the pump assembly. I had to finish cooking over a small fire I built with some kindling. Has anyone else had a pump fail on a classic white gas stove, and is it worth trying to rebuild or should I just replace the whole unit?

Man, I used to just toss the whole stove when the pump went bad. Figured it was a lost cause. Then a buddy showed me how he fixed his old MSR WhisperLite with a ten dollar seal kit from the outdoor store. Took him maybe twenty minutes. Seeing that thing fire right up changed my whole view. Rebuilding is totally doable and way cheaper than a new stove.

That sounds like a real pain, but is a rebuild actually worth the hassle? Those seal kits can be tricky to install right, and if you mess it up you're still out a stove. A new pump unit might cost almost as much as a whole new stove these days.
