Overheard a guy at REI last weekend say Jetboil is the only stove worth buying for backpacking
After 60 miles on the Appalachian Trail with a $30 BRS stove that weighs half as much and still boils water in under 3 minutes, I think the fanboys are missing the point on what actually matters for long hikes.

Why is everyone acting like a Jetboil is the only way to boil water? My cheap BRS has never let me down and i saved enough for extra ramen.

That three hundred dollar price difference between a Jetboil and a standard canister stove - what do you think people are actually missing out on by not having the Jetboil? I mean, I get the convenience of the integrated system and the fancy heat exchanger, but is it really that much faster than a BRS-3000T and a separate titanium pot (like, what, 45 seconds vs 60 seconds to boil)? Or is it more about the fact that they can pull it out at a campsite and have everyone immediately know they dropped real money on their gear?

Oh man, it reminds me of people I know who buy those fancy $80 kitchen knives but can't cook anything more complicated than scrambled eggs! You see the same thing with expensive headphones people wear around town, or people dropping a ton on a high end bike just to ride around the block on weekends. It's like they think the price tag somehow makes the experience better instead of just picking gear that fits what they actually do with it.
