Saw a guy at a campsite in Bend with a $700 titanium spork and it got me wondering
Overheard him say 'the weight savings are worth it' while packing up, but I can't help but think, at what point does chasing ounces stop making sense for the average weekend camper?

I have to disagree with the crowd here. Some folks get a real kick out of fine tuning every piece of gear, and if a titanium spork brings them joy, that's their business. For a weekend camper like me, a plastic spoon from the kitchen drawer works fine, but I don't think it's fair to mock someone for finding satisfaction in the details. The guy probably works hard all week and this is his way of making the trip feel special. We all have our little indulgences, and maybe his just happens to be a real fancy utensil.

Reminds me of people buying super light running shoes for their one weekly jog. The chase for the perfect gear often overshadows just getting out there and doing the thing.

But is it really a problem if someone enjoys picking out gear? Maybe that's just part of the fun for them and keeps them interested.

Was he using that spork to eat gold flake oatmeal or something? For that price, it should also pitch your tent and scare away bears. I guess if you save two ounces on your spoon, you can carry an extra two ounces of pure ego.
