TIL my $10 emergency poncho was basically a trash bag with a hood

Bought a cheap poncho for a hike in Olympic National Park last spring, and within 15 minutes of rain it ripped right down the middle. Lesson learned - is there actually a sub-$30 poncho that doesn't fall apart after one use?

Man my $5 poncho turned into a sad wet scarf in like 10 minutes flat.

Trash bag with a hood" pretty much sums up that whole price range, I patched mine with duct tape and it still dripped on my head.

Read that a lot of these cheap ponchos are basically just recycled plastic sheeting from factories, so you're literally wearing trash. Some outdoor gear blogger tested a bunch of budget ones and found they all failed within 15 minutes of steady rain. The only trick that worked was buying a heavy duty painters tarp and cutting a hole in the middle. Even then you get weird looks at the bus stop.
