TIL why you need to practice with a new camping saw
I tried to cut a small branch and ended up with a blade that wouldn't close. Had to carefully wiggle it free while my friends laughed. Guess reading the manual isn't just for show?

Remember my friend with the new camp stove? He never tested it before the trip. At camp, he spent an hour trying to connect the fuel canister wrong. We all went to bed hungry that night.

Actually, practicing is WAY more important than just reading the manual.

And that practice becomes vital when you're tired or stressed and can't think straight.

Yeah, and it's not just saws. I totally agree with @kim.nina. Take a new tent, for instance. If you don't do a trial run in your yard, you'll be that person fumbling with poles in the dark while it starts to rain. Or a new camp stove. You don't want your first time lighting it to be when you're hungry and cold. That practice run shows you the weird quirks before they become real problems (ask me about the time I almost snapped a tent pole).
