Two tents at the same campsite: ultralight vs. car camping, and I'm stuck in the middle
Last weekend at a site near Asheville, my buddy showed up with a 2 pound tent that cost him $450 while I hauled in a 12 pound cabin tent from Walmart for $60. His setup kept him dry through a storm, but he spent the whole trip worrying about poking a hole in the fabric, and I slept great but had to lug all that weight 200 yards from the car. So which actually makes more sense, spending big on one bombproof light tent or going cheap and heavy for the car trips?
Cheap and heavy all day for car trips. Why pay $450 to baby a tent when you're parking 200 yards from your site? My $60 Coleman has survived five years of Asheville trips and I never once worried about ripping it on a rock. The light stuff makes sense if you're hiking ten miles in, not hauling from a trunk. Car camping is about comfort, so bring the big tent and sleep like a king.
