A visiting conservative pundit gave my free speech club advice that backfired hard
Last semester we brought in a guy from some national think tank to talk about hosting controversial speakers. His big tip: don't give the opposition a platform during the Q&A, just let them shout from the crowd and look unreasonable on video. We tried that with a Milo-type figure in March. Turned into a mess. The protestors looked organized, we looked scared, and the local news spun it as us hiding from debate. Our club lost 15 members after that. Anyone else get advice from an outside expert that tanked an event? What worked better for your campus group?

I mean, who knew that the real controversial take was "let the other side talk, but only if you're prepared for them to be better at it than you are"? Sounds like your expert confused "staging a debate" with "filming a hostage video and calling it PR." Honestly, next time just hire a guy who's actually run a successful event, not one who's just read about them in a think tank brochure.
