Dropped $180 on a ticket to see a speaker my school tried to block, worth every penny
Two weeks ago my campus tried to cancel a talk by a journalist who writes about stuff admin does not like. I paid $180 for a ticket to the off campus event after the school pulled the room booking. Sitting in that packed church basement with 200 other students made me realize how much I did not know about how these fights actually go down. Now I am wondering if I should put my money toward a legal fund for the student group that got their club status frozen. Has anyone here actually donated to one of these campus speech orgs, did it help or was it a waste?
Man, here's the thing nobody brings up: check if your donation is even tax deductible or if the group is set up to take money at all, because a lot of these student clubs get frozen and then can't legally touch funds through school channels, so your cash might just sit there or get bounced back. The smarter move might be asking the group directly what they actually need, sometimes it's not money but people showing up to hearings or helping with paperwork. Also worth knowing that a lot of these legal funds get eaten up by filing fees and admin stuff before anything hits a courtroom, so $20 here and there from a bunch of people does more than one big check. If they're a registered student org you can usually look up their status and see where donations go before you hand anything over.
