Dropped $200 on a guest speaker permit that campus admin rejected anyway
Booked a controversial speaker for our free speech event, paid the $200 facility fee and permit deposit, then the dean denied it citing 'security concerns' the day before, so has anyone else lost cash on these admin hurdles?

That $200 is basically a donation to their bureaucracy fund.

My mechanic had a $95 "shop supply fee" on my last oil change and when I asked what that was he just shrugged and said "it covers rags and stuff." That's what this feels like. You see these fees everywhere now from Ticketmaster to conference fees to DMV renewals, they just tack on extras that have nothing to do with the actual service. It's like everyone realized they can justify anything by just slapping a vague name on it and hoping you pay without asking questions. The $200 is probably paying for someone's morning coffee and a new stapler rather than anything that actually helps the person who paid it.

Next they'll charge for the air you breathe while standing at the counter.
