Heard a freshman say 'free speech is just for the people you agree with' in the library
It was during a debate about that canceled lecture series at Michigan State. I realized a lot of the shouting isn't about principles, it's about who gets to decide which speech is 'valid' in the first place. Has anyone else noticed this shift in how students define the term?

Agree with @mianelson... getting arrested over words you said is a pretty big deal.

You think they actually believe that or are they just repeating something they heard? Feels like people get worked up over campus stuff that won't matter in a year.

Columbia's encampment had over a hundred students arrested. Do you think those people facing suspension or legal trouble see it as something that won't matter?

Honestly saying campus stuff "won't matter in a year" misses the point. Getting arrested over a cause you believe in changes you, and that record can follow people for jobs or grad school. Tbh it's pretty real consequences, not just getting worked up over nothing.
