Just saw a poll that 72% of students at my school think shouting down a speaker is okay. That number actually shocked me.

Seventy-two percent is a wild number.

Shows a real problem with how people see free speech now. They confuse it with the right to not be offended. A university should be a place for tough talks, not silencing them. That number means they don't value the basic rules of debate. It's a scary trend for the future.

Exactly. The whole point of free speech is to protect the stuff that makes people uncomfortable. If we only allow nice, easy ideas, we learn nothing. Universities shutting down debate teaches students the wrong lesson about how to handle disagreement. It sets them up for failure in the real world. That poll number is a bad sign for how we handle tough conversations going forward.

Doesn't it just break your heart to see that? I mean, 72 percent of young people thinking it's okay to shut down someone just because they might be offended. That's a HUGE red flag for where we're heading. You and aaron854 are spot on, universities should be places where you learn to argue your point, not hide from the ones you don't like. It's like they're being taught that being uncomfortable is the worst thing that can happen, instead of just part of learning. Honestly, it makes me really worried about how we'll ever solve big problems if nobody is willing to hear the other side anymore. We're setting them up to just shout over each other instead of actually talking.
