My professor in Ann Arbor cut me off mid sentence for wearing a Turning Point shirt, and half the room clapped
Last Tuesday in my 200 level poli sci class at Michigan, I asked a question about the reading and the prof stopped me and asked me to take off my Turning Point USA shirt before continuing. I just sat there while two kids in the front row clapped, and nobody in that room of about 60 people jumped in for either side. Is there any actual rule that covers what profs can ask students to do about their clothes in class, or is this just a vibe thing now?
Back in 2019 at Ohio State I had a TA in an intro sociology class do basically the same thing to a guy two seats over from me. He was wearing a Ben Shapiro shirt and she told him it was making other students feel unsafe and asked him to zip up his hoodie over it or leave. Kid just sat there and took it and one girl near the front gave the TA a little nod. I remember thinking at the time, if this had been a shirt with a Planned Parenthood logo or a Bernie shirt, nobody would have said a word, and honestly that part bugs me more than the actual request. The fact that 58 out of 60 people just stared at their laptops tells you everything about how scared everyone is to say anything now. I looked it up after class and public schools can restrict speech that messes with the learning environment, but a t shirt with a political logo is not that, and college is not high school anyway. It is a vibe thing now and the vibe is basically do what the prof says or get singled out.
