My roommate from Texas said she felt silenced by our campus's 'safe space' rules during a debate on immigration policy.

I mean, she argued that the rules meant to protect people actually stopped her from sharing her family's real experience at the border, which made me wonder if we're shutting down the wrong conversations.

Safe spaces protect, they don't silence real stories.

Watch how people protect their own stories first.

My cousin runs a support group for veterans. I used to think those spaces were just for venting, but hearing him talk about the rules they have to let everyone share their piece, even the hard stuff, really shifted my view. It's not about shutting people down, it's about making sure everyone gets a turn to speak without getting shouted over.
