TIL our campus police chief in Madison said they wouldn't intervene in the quad protest unless 'property damage exceeded $500' and now both sides are furious.
The pro-Palestine encampment called it a threat, the counter-protesters said it was a green light for chaos, and all week we've just had this weird standoff where everyone is yelling but nobody knows what the actual rule is anymore.

Weirdly enough, that sounds like the most sensible thing I've heard all week... gives them a clear line to act without getting pulled into every little argument.

The chief's actual quote was about the cost to repair damage, not a set dollar limit for action. It was more about explaining their general approach than giving a hard number. People are running with a soundbite without the full context. The policy is still to keep the peace and stop any violence, property damage or not.

Wait, so the line is only property damage over 500 bucks? That's a terrible way to do it. It just tells people they can get away with wrecking stuff as long as they keep it cheap. How does that keep anyone safe if things get heated?
